The Crown star sadly dies with her family by her hospital bedside

The Crown actress Haydn Gwynne has died at the age of 66. The actress was notable for portraying Queen Camilla in The Windsors, a TV spoof.

British actress Haydn Gwynne, best known for The Crown and The Windsors, passed away on Friday, October 20. She was 66 years old. The cause of death was confirmed to be cancer; she was diagnosed one month earlier, her agent confirmed.

In a statement to the BBC, Gwynne’s representatives revealed that the acclaimed actress died “in hospital surrounded by her beloved sons, close family, and friends.” The star resided in the Royal Marsden and Brompton Hospitals in the last several weeks.

Tributes have poured out on social media, including her The Audience play co-star, Dame Helen Mirren.

“Haydn was a delight as a person and a consummate dedicated actress,” she penned on Instagram. “I had the huge pleasure of sharing the stage with her, in the play ‘The Audience’ where, much like the original characters, (Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher) we danced a delicate dance together.”

The Oscar-winning actress added: ” She was both funny and serious at the same time, a brilliant balancing act that her whole career exemplified. We will miss her very much.”

Radio presenter Elaine Page called the late theatre star as “so talented”.

“There’ll be a bright star in heaven tonight. RIP dear Haydn,” she added.

Gwynne is survived by her former partner, Jason Phipps, whom she recently separated from. He was a Jungian psychoanalyst. They share two sons called Orlando and Harrison. The late actress is also survived by her sister, Pippa, and brother Nick.

Stage and screen actor Gwynne made her TV breakthrough in the late 1980s with the drama Nice Work, before earning a BAFTA nomination for Drop Dead Donkey, where she portrayed a cynical journalist Alex Pates.

But she became the face of the royal TV spoof, The Windsors, as Queen Consort Camilla. The royal was portrayed as a stereotypical villain with a scheme to become queen while attempting to rebuild her reputation after King Charles‘ separation from Diana.
